Word of the week - strive to learn new Japanese words or phrases under each category each week.  Watch this page for new words to be posted each week.

BLOCKS, STRIKES, KICKS

  • Gedan Barai – downward block
  • Jodan Uke – High Block
  • Ude Uke – Outward Block
  • Uchi Uke – Inward Block
  • Oi-zuki – straight punch (same side)
  • Gyaku zuki - opposite hand punch
  • Chudan oi zuki - middle level punch

 MISCELLANEOUS

  • Ichi, Ni, San, Shi, Go Roku, Shichi, Hachi, Ku, Ju (Counting to 10).
  • Kamaete (kamae) - Assume fighting position.
  • Hajime - Begin!
  • Rei: Bow
  • Seiza: Assume kneeling position
  • Mawate - Turn around-reverse directrion
  • Yame: Stop

BEGINNING SESSION

  • Seiza - kneel down
  • Otage ni rei - Bow to one another, to show respect for all.
  • Shomen ni Rei - bow to the shomen  lineage (front of dojo).
  • Sensei ni rei - bow to your instructor.
  • Kiritsu - stand up.

ENDING TRAINING SESSION

  • Seiza - kneel
  • Mokuso - meditation
  • Yamae (or Matae) - Stop (meditating)
  • Dojo kun - dojo philosophy
  • Otage ni rei - Bow to one another.
  • Shomen ni rei - bow to the dojo shomen (kami).

DOJO KUN

  • Karate ni sente nashi - There is no first attack in karate
  • Makoto no michi o mamoru koto - Have devotion in seeking a true way.
  • Reigi o omonjiru koto - Always act with good manners.
  • Doryoku no seishin o yashinau koto -Cultivate a spirit of effort & perseverance
  • Kekki no yu o imashimeru koto - Refrain from violent and uncontrolled behavior.
  • Jinkaku kansei ni tsutomeru koto - work to perfect your character.

JUJUTSU

  • Jujutsu - The 'art of softness', the 'way of yielding'.
  • Nihon Jujutsu - Japanese jujutsu.

TITLES

  • Sensei – Instructor, Teacher
  • Shihan-Dai – Sub-Master Instructor
  • Shihan - Master of Martial Arts
  • Dai-Shihan - Great Master
  • Soke – Grandmaster, president
  • Sokeshodai - 1st generation grandmaster
  • Kyoju - Professor of Budo

STANCES

  • Zenkutsu Dachi – Front Stance
  • Kokutsu Dachi – Back Stance
  • Kiba Dachi – Horse-riding Stance
  • Shiko Dachi - Sumo stance
  • Neko Ashi Dachi – Cat Stance
  • Musubi Dachi - Closed heel stance - feet at about 45 degrees, heels touching
  • Fudo Dachi - Ready or 'Yoi' stance.

KUMITE

  • Ippon kumite - one step sparring: used for self defense drills
  • Sanbon kumite - 3-step sparring: used to develop speed & technique.
  • Kiso kumite - structured sparring taken from kata (bunkai).

  • Randori- Free sparring in Judo

BODY PARTS

  • Tekubi – wrist
  • Oyayubi – thumb

KOBUDO-KOBUJUTSU

  • hojojutsu - art that uses a hojo cord (rope)
  • tanto - dagger, knife
  • tonfa - rice- grinder handles
  • Sai - knife shapped truncheon

DOJO

  • Kamiza- Front of dojo (as one enters a dojo, this is the direction they face).
  • Shomen – front, same as the Kamaza
  • Kamidana – shelf or shrine containing luminary of the art.
  • Shimoza – back of the dojo (lower seat).
  • Joseki – The right side of dojo as one enters. Where upper level students line up at the beginning & ending of class.
  • No geiko - training outside in the elements

GREETINGS & RESPONSES

  • Hai: Affirmation, as in 'yes'.
  • Iie: No
  • Wakatimasu - I understand
  • Wakatimasen - I don't understand
  • Domo: thanks
  • Domo Arigato - thank you.

JUDO .

  • Judo- the 'Gentle Way'
  • Judoka - Judo practitioner (usually reserved for 4th dan & higher).
  • jūdōgi - "judo uniform"
  • benkyo-ka - scholar
